Zero tolerance campaign for use of hands-free devices – part two

Posted on August 25, 2009 by Sonoma Valley Sun

Today, the CHP and local law enforcement agencies are joining forces again, for part two of the “zero-tolerance” campaign against drivers violating the “hands-free” cell phone law. They will be aggressively seeking out and taking enforcement action against violators.

Two weeks ago, the CHP and local agencies had conducted the first day of the campaign, issuing over 300 CHP citations and over 350 by local agencies throughout the Bay Area. One enforcement stop in Solano County led to the arrest of a driver for being under the influence. With inattentive drivers being one of the leading factors in accidents and with the use of cell phones contributing significantly, the effort sent a strong message to the motoring public.

The CHP strongly urges all California drivers to act now and utilize an earpiece or other device in order to talk hands-free if it is necessary to use a cell phone while driving. It is also important to note that drivers under the age of 18 are prohibited in all cases from using the cell phone while driving.

The joint effort of the CHP and local law enforcement intends to send a strong message, with average fines for a first-time offense ranging from $120 to $150.
