Celebrate bicycling at the second annual Sonoma Springs Bicycle Festival

On Saturday, Oct. 10 the Valley will celebrate “all things bicycling” at the second annual Sonoma Springs Bicycle Festival. The event, which takes place in Depot Park, will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with many opportunities to learn about bike safety and facilities as well as to celebrate biking in Sonoma Valley.
The festival will be hosted again this year by the Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition in conjunction with Sonoma Valley Cyclists. New partner, the Sonoma Valley Mentoring Alliance, will help expand the reach of the festival and capture the attention of more young people in the community.
The event will feature food, live music, childrens’ helmet giveaways, prizes, bike art projects, bike raffles and even a bike-powered smoothie machine.
A big addition to this year’s festival is an inaugural “Miles for Mentoring” ride.  The 25-mile fun ride will circle through the picturesque Carneros region, looping back to Sonoma. The ride is designed for experienced cyclists who like a challenge. Participants must register in advance for the ride at: sonomabikefest.org.
Ride fees are $15 for children and $35 for adults with all proceeds going to the Sonoma Valley Mentoring Alliance.
The bike festival Web site also makes it possible for festival participants to make an extra donation to help provide refurbished bikes to local children.
“Biking is extremely popular in Sonoma and we want to encourage everyone – young or old – to get out there and pedal,” said Laura Zimmerman, Mentoring Alliance development director.
Event sponsors include the city of Sonoma, The Red Grape, Whole Foods Market, Sonoma Market, Rotary international and Sonoma Valley Cyclists. Additional sponsors are welcome. To get involved, contact the Sonoma Valley Mentoring Alliance: 707.938.1990
