Lost your way? Look no further than the Plaza

A smattering of new signs has popped up around the Plaza in recent weeks, courtesy of the Economic Development Advisory Committee. The four new “wayfinding” signs are a prime example of the city’s support of local businesses, says Laurie Decker, economic development manager for the Sonoma Valley Economic Development Partnership.

“The partnership’s goal with this project is about supporting our downtown businesses by expanding the foot traffic pattern and helping to get people to their doors. Feedback from the businesses has been really positive,” said Decker, who noted that wayfinding signs typically highlight the types of business known to be critical in attracting foot traffic, like retail shops and restaurants.

Heidi Geffen, owner of Tiddle E. Winks is “thrilled” with the new signage. “It looks really friendly and helps all of the businesses look like they are a part of the Plaza, whether they’re on a side street, alley or wherever,” said Geffen.”

The project began as a one-sign pilot last spring. It was well received and Economic Development Advisory Committee recommended expansion of the program to other corners of the Plaza. Now, a total of four new signs with surrounding drought tolerant landscaping can be seen at the intersection of Broadway and Napa Street and near the intersection of First Street East and East Napa Street.

The project was funded by the Sonoma’s Redevelopment Agency and all told – including sign creation, installation and landscaping – cost $30,000.
