The Boys & Girls Clubs of Sonoma Valley recently announced that Jake Benning, a longtime member of the club, recent Sonoma Valley High School graduate and rock star in the Computer Clubhouse, has been awarded a $2,500 scholarship from the Intel Computer Clubhouse Network and Museum of Science.
Benning’s work in the club’s recording studio and his focus on education in the areas of graphic design and musical performance at the Santa Rosa Junior College played major roles in his receiving of the scholarship. For his senior project last year, Benning created a CD of original music in the Intel Computer Clubhouse recording studio and received high marks from his teachers. He also received a $500 scholarship from the Boys & Girls Clubs earlier in the year.
The Intel Computer Clubhouse Network is an international community of 100 Computer Clubhouses located in 20 different countries around the world, including the one located at the Boys & Girls Clubs’ Maxwell Clubhouse. The Computer Clubhouse provides a creative and safe out-of-school learning environment where young people can develop skills, and build self-confidence through the use of technology. It gives participants the opportunity to become designers and creators – not just passive consumers – of technology. The Computer Clubhouse provides the resources, materials, and tools for young people to develop projects in the following areas: Sound Engineering, Digital Video Editing, Graphic Design, Animation, Robotics, Web Design, Video Game and Interactive Programming.
