Sonoma Creek cleanup day

Posted on February 4, 2010 by Sonoma Valley Sun

Along with puddles and drought-relief, the heavy winter rains have brought lots of garbage and debris downstream, leaving litter on the bank of Sonoma Creek. The Maxwell Farms Regional Park Stewardship invites volunteers to join the Sonoma Creek and Park Cleanup on Saturday, Feb. 6 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
“I am very excited that the stewardship’s first community event is to clean up the park and creek”, says Mallory Davenport, stewardship leader. “This is a great partnership between Parks, the Boys & Girls Clubs, the Sonoma Ecology Center and community members who care about the ecological health and beauty of their park. We encourage people of all ages and physical abilities to join the cleanup.”
Julie Jehly, watershed stewardship coordinator, said, “The new stewardship group is jumping right in and making a difference in our local environment.”
Picking up this garbage is a great way to help the beavers and other animals living in Sonoma Creek and the park, she explained. “Plus, it just makes the park look so much better and more enjoyable for everyone in the community.”
Volunteers are directed to meet in the parking lot at Maxwell Farms Regional Park, 100 Verano Ave. in Sonoma. Plan on getting dirty, Jehly said, “as we tend native plants and remove garbage. Please wear sturdy shoes, and bring gloves and a water bottle.”
Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult, and those over 14 need written guardian permission. Parking fee is waived for anyone participating in the clean up.
