Barbara McElroy, music director at Sonoma Valley High School has been named Director of the Year by the Northern California Band and Choir Directors Association.
To be awarded the honor, McElroy had to meet a set of stringent requirements including being a band or choir director, having a healthy active music program, being a participant in the Honor Band/Choir in Northern California, as well as having made a significant contribution to the Northern California Band and Choir Directors Association’s success.
McElroy has been an active member of the Northern California Band and Choir Directors Association for 38 years and has held the offices of president-elect, president and past president. This year she took a large contingent of students to the play in the honor band in Sebastopol as well as 13 students to perform in the honor choir at California State University, Chico.
McElroy has taught in the Sonoma Valley school district since 1975. She has both a bachelor of arts and a Masters of music from California State University, Chico. Her main performance instruments include the French horn, trumpet, piano, organ and synthesizer as well as voice. At the high school she teaches concert choir, concert marching band, Madrigals, jazz band and Jazzberries.
