Summer began in earnest on Monday with the annual Summer Solstice and what a glorious day it was. Finally, the warm weather and sunny skies that we’ve come to expect from a Sonoma summer.
But that’s not to say that we’ve not been enjoying the fruits of summer for some time now. The Tuesday night Farmers Market has been bringing the Valley together each week since April for a fabulous mid-week respite complete with friends, food and entertainment. Never has there been a better reason to get out the picnic basket, the blanket and in some cases, even the wicker furniture. This week, the Whiskey Thieves kept the front half of the market hopping while on the back 40, people relaxed and waited for night to fall so they could watch “City Lax,” a lacrosse-inspired movie brought to the amphitheatre courtesy of Nancy O’Neal and her new business Movie Starz, and the Sonoma International Film Society. You can catch Nancy’s next movie on Saturday, June 26 out at the driving range on Arnold Drive. See page 25 for details.
For Valley children, both summer school and summer camps are in full swing. Adele Harrison Principal, Karla Conroy, has made some major changes for the better to summer school. She’s excited, the students are excited and best of all, Valley constituents are excited enough to fund the “out of the box” thinking that brought about this completely revamped program. Take a drive by Adele Harrison around 8:30 a.m. or so to catch the cheerful new attitude as students are walking and riding their bikes to the school. The full story is on page two.
In terms of camps, there are kids all over town experiencing great things. Among them, the annual Dragons Basketball Camp for boys is going on at the high school. A fundraiser for the Dragons’ basketball program, the camp is staffed by high school players and keeps droves of young boys busy for a few hours each day. It also brings needed funding to high school athletics.
The Sebastini Theatre’s Camp Shakespeare wraps up this Friday with a performance at the theatre this weekend. And Teen Jazz Camp concludes with a performance in the Plaza amphitheatre on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Check out one or both performances to see the best of what children are doing this summer.
As for the adults, the Sun wonders what families are doing for vacation this summer? If traffic – both foot and auto – is any indication, it seems as if the Plaza and surrounding areas are seeing their usual influx of tourists. This is great for the economy of our town but what about that of our citizens? Do any of us have the money to get out of Dodge for a few days? Let us know what you’ve got planned and we’ll report back what we hear, acting as the completely unofficial economic barometer of our City.
Wherever you go, be sure to take some great snapshots and send them to us for our second annual “Moment in the Sun” weekly photo, see page 7 for details. Whether it’s kids frolicking, pets panting or even mom and dad getting silly with the water skis, we want to capture your moments in the sun in our Sun.
As always, have fun, be safe, enjoy your week and continue to pick up the Sun for all the latest news and happenings in Sonoma.
