Brush with disaster

A small grass fire on the shoulder of Fifth Street East just south of Verano Avenue was quickly extinguished Monday afternoon at 3:30. At least three passing motorists used blankets and a fire extinguisher to smother the flames, according to a witness. The Sonoma Fire Department followed with a dousing of the area, which borders the high, dry grass of the Montini Preserve cow pasture.
