Unless donations start to skyrocket, Sonoma’s annual fireworks display might turn out to be a dud.
The Sonoma Valley Volunteer Firefighters Association has produced the event, a nearly sacred local tradition, for more than 30 years. But it may not have the necessary funds to put on the caliber of fireworks show that the community has come to expect, according to spokesman Trevor Smith.
He said that a poor economy and rising costs are responsible for a $10,000 shortfall that could result in a smaller show or even a cancellation of this year’s event.
The 2011 show has already been scaled back, Smith said. Unless donations increase substantially, “You’ll notice the difference.”
The production is an all-volunteer, non-profit effort. Association members donate their time, and many have independently taken classes and have undergone the rigorous process of becoming licensed pyrotechnicians.
The cost of fireworks and equipment, though, remain sky high. To offset the cost, monetary donations are critical. Send your donation to Sonoma Valley Volunteer Firefighters Association, 630 Second Street West, Sonoma, CA 95476. Donations can be made by credit card at svfra.org/fireworks.html.
I don’t see any scaled down Cinco de Mayo celebrations!
