Long-time educator David Donnelley will be honored as Teacher of the Year at a celebration on Friday, May 18 starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Temple Lodge at 669 Broadway.
Donnelley has been a teacher for 28 years, the last 19 of them in Sonoma. Having taught most every subject, he currently teaches College Prep and Honors Economics at Sonoma Valley High School.
Of the honor, Donnelley humbly declined to take credit saying that when senior students arrive in his classroom, they’ve already been prepared by the best of the Sonoma Valley Unified School District’s teachers, making his job all that much easier. “I get to piggyback off of all the work their K-11 teachers have done. Because Sonoma’s teachers function as a team, students are snapped in and ready to go when they walk into my class.”
In addition to being a top educator, Donnelley once co-founded a successful biotechnology company that was sold to the Japanese in 1988. He has held board positions in education since the early 70s including being a founding board member of the Sonoma Charter School. He currently sits on the board of both the Sonoma Teaching Project and the Sonoma Valley High School Development Trust.
The Temple Lodge has honored a Sonoma Valley Teacher of the Year since 1997 and provides annual scholarships to graduating Sonoma Valley High School seniors.
