Sonoma Valley water workshop

A community workshop to discuss water resources in Sonoma Valley with key area water agencies, strategists, and influencers is on tap for Thursday, October 30, 6-8:30 p.m., at the Sonoma Veterans Building.

The majority of this evening will be spent in small, discussion groups, which will allow community members to share their concerns and solutions directly with local Sonoma Valley water resource organizations, such as the Sonoma Ecology Center, the Sonoma Resource Conservation District, the City of Sonoma and the Sonoma County Water Agency.

First District Supervisor Susan Gorin, who is hosting the free meeting, said, “Our water system is connected, and we need to create management techniques that take an integrated approach to creating a vibrant Sonoma Valley.”

“This is a forum to share your priorities and vision for how water is managed in Sonoma Valley,” said Richard Dale, executive director of the Sonoma Ecology Center. “We hope this event spurs a community conversation about how water issues are connected, and the tools we can use to help realize our shared goals.”

Topic will include: projects that capture storm water and recharge groundwater, creeks, flooding, community engagement, water conservation and the drought, and funding options.

“Our watershed and our community are so important to us all,” Dale said. “It is time to have an open and creative discussion on how to address the water crisis that effects us all.”

Sonoma Ecology Center Biologist and Research Program Manager Caitlin Cornwall, who is helping to plan the event, explained, “We want to bring various water-related efforts together in one conversation with the community so that people understand we are working together, that we know solutions must be community supported, and that we want to hear what people want, fear, and think.”

The venue is located at 126 First Street West, Sonoma.
