A second new tasting room has opened in downtown Sonoma this month: Adastra Wines.

The tasting room takes over the former site of Rumpus, which closed in early February so owner Scott Peterson could concentrate on winemaking versus retail operations.

The winery was started by Edwin Richards and Catherine Thorpe. The couple moved to Sonoma in 1995 to launch the label at Thorpe’s parents’ property, a 33-acre farm and organic vineyard in the Carneros AVA.

Today, Adastra produces Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah, and a red blend, Ed’s Red. Wines are produced using certified organic grapes.

This weekend the winery officially opens their “art barn” tasting room, which features wine and original local artwork. The space offers a funky rustic feel reminiscent of the barn at the Adastra farm.

Saturday they will be hosting an opening party from 2 PM until 6:30 PM. It will feature food from Oso, gourmet chocolate pairings from Truffle Gateau, live music from Don Watanabe, and artwork by Carole Watanabe and Martha Hart.

The tasting room will offer discounted wine purchases throughout the weekend and tastings are $20. Regular hours for Adastra Wines are Wednesday-Monday, 11 AM-7 PM. The tasting room is located at 5 E. Napa St., Sonoma; 721-1914; adastrawines.com.
