Virtual lecture event: The case for universal property

Posted on January 27, 2021 by Sonoma Valley Sun

Peter Barnes — author, environmentalist, economic radical — previews his newest book, Ours: The Case for Universal Property, in a January 29 Zoom lecture presented by Sonoma’ Praxis Peace Institute.

Barnes has focused on the deep flaws of capitalism in his previous works including Capitalism 3.0, and The People’s Land: Who Owns the Sky.

In the book, to be released in June, Barnes proposes a “cap and dividend” program, modeled on the Alaska Permanent Fund, that could reduce greenhouse emissions and create a citizens dividend for all Americans. He contends that this proposal is more workable and sustainable than the cap-and-trade policies of the Kyoto Protocol.

Barnes is also the founder of Working Assets/Credo, a progressive communications company that gave over $90 million to nonprofits last year. In 1995, he was named Socially Responsible Entrepreneur of the year for Northern California. He has served on the boards of Greenpeace, Rainbow Workers’ Cooperative, the California Solar Industry Association, and several others. He is also the founder of the Mesa Refuge, a retreat for progressive writers and thinkers in Point Reyes, CA.

Praxis’ Georgia Kelly said, “This is an important and unique and inspiring perspective on how we can value the commons, save the planet, and create more equality.”

Tickets for the 4 p.m. lecture are $20 general and $15 for Praxis members. Register at www.praxispeace.org/events
