In-person or online? School District’s ‘hybrid’ teaching plan

Posted on February 27, 2021 by Sonoma Valley Sun

Sonoma Valley schools will gradually return to in-person learning for younger students whose parents choose that option, the District announced Friday. The ‘hybrid’ model will begin in late March.

Elementary schools will begin hybrid instruction four days a week on March 29 for grades K through 2, and on April 6 for grades 3 through 5. Students will arrive at 8:20 and be dismissed at 10:45 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. They will work from home for the remainder of the school day. On Wednesdays they will remain at home; teachers will check in on them for at least 30 minutes.

Parents were asked some time ago whether they would send their kids to school if that option became available, or whether they preferred to continue with distance learning. This allowed the district to plan a partial re-opening. Those who opted for in-person learning will be at school part-time, and at home part-time, as part of a so-called hybrid model.

Students who opted for distance learning will have instruction from 12:30 to 2:45, doing independent work in the morning. As with the hybrid plan, Wednesdays will be fully independent work, with a 30-minute check-in from the teacher.

Middle and high school grades cannot reopen until the County is in the red tier (seven or fewer COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people), but those numbers show a decline. “We are optimistic that secondary students whose parents chose in-person instruction will return and attend a modified class schedule (hybrid) before the end of the school year,” the statement said.

  1. Unless our educators & community fight for in person school like coaches fought for youth sports, it is reasonable to think we will not have a return to any decent amount of effective in-person learning any time soon & possibly well into next year. Sonoma County has never been out of the purple tier & with this ever mutating virus, we could remain purple for a long time. But as Europe & 2/3 of the schools in America have shown, this shouldnt stop us from providing effective & safe in person education. All we need are educators to fight for kids like coaches did.
