Travelers along Highway 12 in Boyes Hot Springs may have noticed the first of many LED signs to be erected at local fire stations.
The signs will will allow special messaging from the fire department, emergency managers, and the county. Examples: critical fire weather (Red Flag warnings), Public Safety Power Shut-offs, evacuations during emergencies (available routes/closures) and other public safety information and warnings.
The signage can be controlled remotely and can be linked to alerting applications already in use, and will continue to work in the event of power outages being supported by the fire stations emergency generators.
The signage program all started with the hard work and dedication of Robert Molesworth, an employee with both the Sonoma Valley and Kenwood Fire Districts. With the support of both fire district’s Board of Directors and Volunteer Associations, Robert began to seek funding through grants and donations.
Traction started when Pacific Gas & Electric awarded a grant for $5,000. Parsons Lumber & Hardware graciously donated all the necessary wiring. With the support of Supervisor Susan Gorin, the County Board of Supervisors and the County Department of Emergency Management, there is funding for two 2 signs per fiscal year countywide, starting with Sonoma Valley stations 3 and 5.
The project will be supervised by the Sonoma County Department of Emergency Management, and executed by Robert Sanders & Company.
