The Sonoma Valley High School athletic field is now Robert “Bob” Midgley Jr. Field, named for the school’s athletic director and football coach who passed away two years ago. A Sonoma Valley High graduate who returned to the school to teach, Midgley was 55 when he died in January of 2021.
The school board made its unanimous choice on April 20.
Elizabeth Kaufman, acting superintendent, said the district also recognized the nominations it received for Clarence Edsall and Pedro Merino, who were also deserving candidates in the naming process. Clarence Edsall, a WWII veteran who went on to teach at SVHS for 30 years in the 1940s also served as the head football, basketball, and track coach for several decades. Pedro Merino, a current Spanish teacher and varsity soccer coach at the high school, has inspired generations of students both in the classroom and on the field for 30 years.
