113-year-old Sonoma bridge to be replaced

Posted on June 21, 2023 by Sonoma Valley Sun

Members of Sonoma City Council and Congressman Mike Thompson wield shovels at the Chase Street bridge groundbreaking ceremony Monday morning.

The bridge, originally constructed in 1910, spans Nathanson Creek between Austin and Broadway has been deemed unsafe by CalTrans. Granite Construction will begin work on June 26 to create two vehicle lanes, with shoulders and sidewalks on both sides of the lanes. The bridge will be replaced with a single span 53′ wide, 30′ long concrete bridge with 12′ high abutments.

Federal funds assisted in the facilitation of the project, supplemented by funding from the city of Sonoma

This project will replace an existing structurally deficient bridge as defined by the California Department of Transportation (CalTrans) along Chase Street over Nathanson Creek.  The replacement of the bridge is needed to provide a safe and adequate creek crossing for vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians.  This project is partially funded with a federal grant.

The bridge will be closed to through traffic for a minimum of six months beginning on July 5, 2023.
