Sonoma Plein Air artist Wayne McKenzie

An artist conveys a soulful connection to place and captures a moment in time. Such interpretation manifests in different forms of creation – various genres, styles, and techniques. But whatever the ultimate choice, the perspective is uniquely creative and rooted in a deep, personal vision.
This fascination with style and artistry is what makes the work resonate; what allows greatness. It is a lifelong immersion of personal expression and exploration. Such an artist is Wayne McKenzie, a participant in this month’s Sonoma Plein Air art festival.
McKenzie says his paintings emanate from a laid-back confidence that comes from his Australian heritage. With loose brushwork and bold use of color and light, he brings a unique perspective to his surroundings and subject matter. He takes himself and his work “on a visual journey of discovery.”
Sonoma has been a long-chosen location for his inspiration. He has been actively involved in the town’s art scene, with 10-plus years of participation in the annual Sonoma Plein Air Festival (this year, Sept. 11-16). Last year, he was asked to be the artist in residence at the Bartholomew Winery Sonoma. Their gallery now bursts with color, light, and an exuberant celebration of the appreciation of wine.
Wayne now lives in Lake Tahoe with his wife and daughters and draws daily inspiration from the beauty that surrounds him. As well, he has traveled the world; to places that speak to his unique vision. He embraces the essence of all locations and brings to life the ethos of place.
What has resulted in his successful career is a varied collection and body of work. His New York City and San Francisco Street scenes pulsate with a rhythm of bold color and light. The majesty of his Colorado mountains and California beaches seamlessly blends serenity and realism. A Carmel and Sonoma vignette (including this week’s Sun cover) charms with nuance and location.
And the accolades have continually followed. He has shown his work in exhibits in such art meccas as Carmel, Sundance, Telluride, Denver, and New York City. He received first place at events including the Napa Valley Art Festival, and has been among the best of show at the Los Gatos and Carmel Plein Air Festivals, among many others.
Renowned art critic Susan Viebrock put it this way: “Anyone who doesn’t love a McKenzie must have a low opinion of joy… his work has a delightful sense of movement and vibration.”
