The Quetzalén dancers, directed by Sonoma’s 2024 Treasure Artist Víctor Ferrer, perform this Sunday, June 9 in ¡Así danzan los niños! This Is the Way the Children Dance!
The dance recital, held at El Verano School, 18606 Riverside Drive, Sonoma, begins at 6 pm, and doors open at 4:30 for an initial 5 pm performance by Mariachi Juvenil (Youth Mariachi) of Santa Rosa.
65 dancers will perform dances from the states of Yucatán, Veracruz, Sinaloa, Nayarit and Jalisco. The Quetzalén dance troupe is known for the beautiful traditional costumes from the different states of Mexico, made by a local Mexican artisan dressmaker.
Ferrer, Director of Grupo Folklórico Quetzalén, told the Sun, “We are delighted to showcase the talents of these amazing children, and share the richness of folk dance with our community. ¡Así Danzan los Niños! promises to transport audiences to Mexico through vibrant costume colors, captivating music, and intricate footwork.”
The dancers range from five to eighteen years old, and all are students in Sonoma Valley Unified schools. The concert, sponsored by Sonoma Tourism, SV Unified School District, Sonoma Immigrant Services, the Springs Municipal Advisory Council, El Verano School, KimZin Creative and Sonoma Hispanic Media, is free to the community. Donations are welcome to cover event expenses and future costume projects for the students.
