Prepare for detours: 2024 Citywide Slurry Seal Project now underway

Posted on August 8, 2024 by Sonoma Sun

The City of Sonoma has announced that the 2024 Citywide Slurry Seal Project is scheduled to begin today, August 8th. Streets will be closed to traffic during the slurry application process until it has been determined by personnel that the streets are safe to drive on.

The Project will begin with preparations on August 8th and will be followed by the application of the slurry seal on August 13th through August 16th. After the application of the slurry seal, new markings on the street surface will be installed. The Slurry Seal program is part of the City’s commitment to keeping the City’s streets in a safe and functional condition for all modes of transportation.

Any unexpected traffic during the application can be dangerous and it is vital for everyone’s safety that you do not drive, walk (including your pets) or bicycle on the wet slurry. The street marking application will be the final portion of the project and will require some traffic control, but the streets will remain open to traffic.

Each affected residence and business will receive a notice with information about temporary restrictions to on-street parking and driving on the newly sealed roadway, plus a map and schedule of the affected roads before the slurry seal application.

A slurry seal is a preventive maintenance road treatment that involves the application of a mixture of water, asphalt emulsion, aggregate (very small crushed rock), and additives to an existing asphalt pavement surface. It helps protect streets from water penetration, provides a new surface with improved skid-resistance, and extends the life of the roadway.

A slurry seal is a surface treatment that extends the life of pavement and needs to be applied to a street before it begins to fail with potholes and broken surfaces. It is a cost-effective way to keep streets maintained.

The project generally involves street surface treatment (slurry seal) for up to eighteen (18) streets throughout the City. Specifically, the improvements consist of surface preparation; crack seal; removal and replacement of pavement striping and markings; public outreach; protection of existing utility structures, curb and gutter, and cross gutter; traffic control; and other related work.

The project amount is $294,950.00. This project is funded by Road Maintenance and Rehabilitation Account funds received from Senate Bill 1 (SB 1), the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017. No City General Fund proceeds are being used for this project.

  1. Does any of this treatment apply to areas outside the city proper? Some of the streets and roads in the Watmaugh/Arnold area are in rough shape.
