Diabetes is a growing health problem in the United States, a typically “silent” disease until its effects become serious.

Sometimes referred to as “high blood sugar” diabetes has historically affected older populations but is increasingly evident in the young. Early symptoms of diabetes include constant thirst, frequent urination, and sluggishness after eating. Later symptoms include eye problems, and foot pain. Eventually, diabetes affects the body’s organs and can cause kidney failure and blindness; it is the leading cause of amputation of toes and feet.

Understanding diabetes and getting a proper diagnosis is essential to stop the progression of the disease. Many people with diabetes don’t realize they have it until it has progressed too far to prevent damage to their bodies. Living with diabetes requires careful eating of low-glycemic foods, maintaining a proper weight, daily testing of one’s blood glucose level, getting regular exercise and receiving proper medical care. This Diabetes Health Fair is an opportunity for the public to learn more about this disease and its control.
