Superintendent Martens resigns

The president of the local school board announced today that Dr. Pamela Martens has resigned, effective immediately, as Superintendent of the Sonoma Valley Unified School District.  Martens was hired in 2008, following the resignation of Dr. Barbara Young.

The school board has not yet accepted the resignation, but is expected to do so at a special meeting on Tuesday, followed by a closed board meeting on Wednesday morning to consider the vacancy.  With the principal at Sonoma Valley High School retiring at the end of this year, two of the most visible and influential positions in our local public schools are due to be filled presumably in the next few months.

The school board is scheduled to meet in regular session on Tuesday evening, January 12, at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Meeting Room at 177 W. Napa St.  The board is due to vote on budget cuts for the coming year; regular meetings allow time for comment by the public on any topic.
