The longest suspension bridge when it was built in 1937, and a siren call to the world ever since, the Golden Gate Bridge is a cash machine locally. More than 100,000 cars and trucks pass over the bridge each day, and at $5 each, even for the round trip, that adds up. And that’s not counting the 7.4 million Golden Gate Transit riders each year or the 1.9 million Golden Gate Ferry riders.
Sanders volunteered to serve on the Golden Gate Bridge board earlier this year, and her appointment was quickly endorsed by the Sonoma city council. “Congratulations to Mrs. Sanders,” Mayor Stanley Cohen said, “Another role for the City of Sonoma.”
The County of Sonoma has three seats on the bridge district board: one a supervisor, one a mayor or council member, and the third a member of the public. On August 9, Sanders was endorsed unanimously by the Sonoma County Council of Mayors and Council Members. Ratification of her appointment by the Board of Supervisors, the last step for Sanders, took place Tuesday.
