Sonoma-Aswan Sister City Committee members, Egyptian dignitaries and citizens of the Bay Area will gather for a meeting on Monday, March 15 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. to discuss current projects and initiatives between the cities of Sonoma, United States and Aswan, Egypt. The meeting will be held in the Sonoma Community Center, room 110.
The Consul Heba Zaki from the Consulate General of the Arab Republic of Egypt in San Francisco will address the meeting on the topic of “Egyptian Culture – Insights and Reflections.” Drawings by the children of Aswan on the Nile River water ecology will also be displayed as part of Sonoma-Aswan Sister City Committee’s project titled “Our Beautiful Water.”
The event is by advance reservation only with payment in cash or check at the door. Tickets including program and refreshments are $10 for nonmembers. Zaki currently serves as a consul at the Consulate General of the Arab Republic of Egypt in San Francisco. She is a graduate of Cairo University, majoring in political science. She joined the Egyptian Foreign Service in 1993. Prior to her appointment to San Francisco, Zaki served as a deputy head of Northern America Affairs in the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs with previous postings in London. Zaki authored several articles on Middle Eastern politics; women and Islam; and human rights in Islam.
The Sonoma-Aswan Sister City Committee was founded in 2008 by Ambassador Abderahman Salaheldin in friendship with Sherri Ferris and Carol Blackman of Protocol Professionals, Inc., as part of a mandate by Sister Cities International for U.S. cities to partner with Islamic nations. Its mission is to foster international cooperation and understanding through the sharing of information, knowledge, and technology, between the cities of Sonoma and Aswan. To fulfill this mission, the Sonoma-Aswan Sister City Committee develops and promotes cross-city exchanges of individuals, groups, and organizations in areas such as business, technology, healthcare, housing and urban development, environment, arts, culture, tourism and education. The Sonoma-Aswan Sister City Committee operates under the auspices of the Sonoma Sister Cities Association. Guests and new members are welcome with advance reservations.
