Suspect leaves kids in car, runs from cops

The man who fled on foot after being pulled over by a sheriff’s deputy, leaving his young children in the car as he evaded a police manhunt, is still at large. His 6-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter were returned to their mother shortly after Luis Humberto Perez, 54, abandoned them during a traffic stop on Sonoma Highway in the Springs.

Perez was wanted on a variety of charges when he was spotted by a sheriff on patrol near Thompson Avenue on March 7. The deputy knew Perez had a “No Bail” warrant, and pulled him over to investigate.

According to the sheriff’s report, Perez denied being the suspect. As identification, he produced a driver’s license from Washington State. It had his photo but, as the officer learned, it was a fraud. While the deputy was getting confirmation over his patrol car radio, Perez took off running. He fled northbound along the highway, ducked through a parking lot and disappeared into a residential neighborhood.

The deputy stayed with the children and radioed for assistance. Eleven members of the sheriff’s department responded and, with air support from the sheriff’s helicopter “Henry One,” mounted an extensive search of the area.

Perez, or whatever he may be calling himself now, remains at large. Authorities said that he has used 31 different names and 17 dates of birth in his criminal career. Before this incident, Perez was already wanted on charges of domestic violence, child endangerment, using false documents to conceal identity and identity theft, all felonies.

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Perez is asked to call The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office at (707) 565-2121 or call 911.
