An American Eagle-eye view of the Sonoma Valley Joint Memorial Day Observance shows another large and reverent crowd for Monday’s honors at Sonoma Veterans Memorial Park
Flags flew, the band played, veterans marched and more than a few tears were shed during the hometown tradition 52 years strong. Speakers included Carl H. “Chip” Allen, former U.S. Navy submarine officer, and Rev. John S. Crews, retired U.S. Navy captain and a former Naval chaplain.
Among the images on this blustery but warm spring day: the procession of local veterans from all service branches; the procession of a riderless horse; the crowd, slowly at first but with growing emotion, joining in to sing “God Bless America;” young children getting most of the words to “The Pledge of Allegiance” correctly; heads bowed during the poignant rendition of “Taps;” the placement of wreaths by veterans and service groups; the release of white doves; and other moments of pride and patriotism.
After the ceremony came the free “All-American Picnic” at the Veterans Building. On the menu, of course: hot dogs and hamburgers.
