As Sonoma’s new mayor, Joanne Sanders, at left, presents a ceremonial gavel to the outgoing Laurie Gallian at Monday’s city council meeting.
Following traditional protocol of rotating the post among the councilmembers, Sanders, who had been mayor pro tem, was elevated to the top spot. Ken Brown was named the new mayor pro tem, also by a unanimous council vote. Each will serve one year.
“I’m not sad, I have another year on the council,” Gallian remarked. “It’s not over, it’s just beginning, again. This is a passion, not work.” As for Sanders, who served as mayor in 2008, “What you see is what you get. Or got, maybe a little more polished.”
