While Sonoma City Hall gets spruced up for its 100th anniversary, celebration organizers are asking the next generation of Sonomans for some aesthetic help.
The city is soliciting art from all Sonoma Valley students, grades K–12, for the event’s official poster. City Historian George McKale said last week that anticipation is running high.
“We have not received any [submissions] so far, but through word of mouth I hear there are 50 coming our way,” McKale said. “The only requirement is that City Hall’s included in the artwork.”
Deadline for submissions is 5 p.m., Thursday, July 31. Artwork must be in color, no bigger than 11 by 17 inches and will be reviewed by the City Hall Commemoration Committee. The winner will receive $100 cash – as well as special recognition during the Sept. 9 centennial celebration.
City Hall’s 1908 dedication featured a free barbecue, horse races, a grand ball and a parade which included a horse-drawn picture of Sonoma founder General Vallejo.
“They circled the Plaza with him,” McKale said, adding that this year’s festivities will be slightly lower key but still well-attended.
“It’s a Tuesday night Farmers Market night as well as a jazz night, so we’ll have a lot of people in the Plaza,” McKale said.
Entry forms may be downloaded from the City of Sonoma website at www.sonomacity.org, or at the interim City Hall at 32 Patten St.
