Coastal Cleanup Day in Sonoma Valley

This year’s Coastal Cleanup Day is no day at the beach – you can participate right here in the Sonoma Valley. The Sonoma Ecology Center is coordinating creek cleanups on Saturday, September 20 from 9 a.m. to noon at Maxwell Farms Regional Park, Larson Regional Park, Fryer Creek and Nathanson Creek Preserve.

The effort not only helps preserve local waterways and wetlands, it stops trash from making its way to the sea. Some 80 percent of ocean debris comes from inland sources such as creeks and rivers. This debris can be harmful and even fatal to marine wildlife, and even pose human health hazards.

Bring clothes that can get dirty, gloves, covered shoes, and a hat or sunscreen. Tools and collection buckets will be provided, along with great snacks and drinks donated by local merchants.

The workday concludes with a light lunch and celebration from noon to 1 p.m. For more information contact Trace McKellips at 996-0712 or sonomaecologycenter.org.
