It’s been an official goal of the city council, since 2009, to “support a community swimming pool.” In 2011, the council appointed members Ken Brown and Tom Rouse as liaisons to the nonprofit Sonoma Valley Health and Recreation Association, the driving force in getting the pool built. But when the group asked the council for a loan, Brown and Rouse, as SVHR board members, recused themselves from any council discussion or vote to support the pool. Is that water-logged logic, or is this just Page 3?… Meanwhile, the ever-buoyant Paul Favaro, the SVHR president, says the project is on schedule to open in the summer of 2016 (at worst, a year later.) Just enough time to get back into swimsuit shape.
Class acts at the Sonoma Harvest Wine Auction: tributes to winemaker Bob Sessions and auctioneer David Reynolds, who both passed away this year. The Sonoma County Harvest Fair’s annual Gala, September 28 at the Wells Fargo Center for the Arts, has its own unique honor planned, this one a salute to the late Saralee McClelland Kunde. The industry icon was known for her exuberance, can-do spirit and the big, floppy garden hats that became her fashion signature. As an auction item for this year’s event, her husband Richard has donated the hat she wore to the 2013 Gala – a black and silver stunner – to raise money for the fair, farm youth and agricultural causes.
The Aqua Caliente Knolls signage on Highway 12, the entry point to the neighborhood at Estella Drive, may change to just ‘Knolls’ if a few residents of the subdivision have their way. So says Bob Hughes, who is rallying to save the name/sign that has been in existence for over 45 years. Now for some unexplainable reason a few residents feel that the words ‘Aqua Caliente’ should be removed from the entrance sign, he says. “The whole concept seems to be a ridiculous adventure with no real explanation or purpose — unless of course you consider other disturbing concepts such as efforts to remove Spanish heritage symbols from the area.”
Not every town has a Tarot, Art & Tattoo Galley, so celebrate the grand opening of Kristine and Shotsie Gorman’s unique emporium on Sunday, September 14. The Springs space, at 17977 Sonoma Highway, will feature performances by Tobias and drop-in musical guests, from 1 to 8 p.m. Hear it live on KSVY FM, or drop in (via the pedi-cab shuttle) for what Kristine says will be a “super happening” day. And as the Tarot reader, she should know.
Did you realize the Montini Open Space Preserve, usually discussed in terms of cows and bike paths, was being studied as a site for groundwater storage and flood run-off? Turns out it’s not suited for that task, so the $1.9 million study continues. Says Supervisor Susan Gorin, “We can’t abandon the search for places to reduce flood risk, recharge groundwater and enhance habitat.”
