By their record alone, Sonoma knew that El Molino was a much improved team this season, backed by their win on October 10 over their rivals, the Analy Tigers, for their first league win in over four years.
The Dragons also knew they had to come out and play better at the onset of Friday night’s action against the Lions in what had become a key Sonoma County League matchup. That’s exactly what they did.
Two first quarter interceptions fired up the defense, and along with 16 points in the first quarter from their offense, Sonoma rode their wave of momentum to a 30-20 victory over El Molino.
The Lions (3-4, 1-2 SCL) owned the game’s time of possession, converting on six third downs and two fourth downs to keep the ball in the hands of their offense, but timely defensive stops and turnovers forced by the Dragons (2-4, 2-1 SCL) put a halt to many of the ideas El Molino had in mind.
Senior running back Nick Fedrick rushed for three touchdowns, giving him 11 on the season, and almost had a twelfth that was brought back thanks to a holding penalty.
Senior wide receiver Steve Filippi had nine receptions for 84 yards and junior tight end Jesse Bojarsky had a 25-yard touchdown from senior quarterback Jake Powers.
Defensively, senior linebacker Bradley Ramirez had his second straight game with an interception, and junior linebacker Kris Patrick led the team with nine tackles.
Sonoma has won their last two home games and are tied for second place in league play with Healdsburg, who won their rivalry game with Windsor on Friday night. Petaluma, who is undefeated in league play at 2-0, had their bye this week.
The Dragons are still in contention for both the league title and a playoff spot, but their remaining schedule sees them play three tough games to end league play in a very competitive SCL.
It starts this Friday night, October 24, with a game against Casa Grande in Petaluma. The Gauchos gave the Analy Tigers their second consecutive loss with a 29-6 win Friday night, and are looking for their fifth consecutive SCL title.
A replay of the Dragons win over El Molino can be seen tonight on SVTV 27 starting at 7 p.m.
