When I asked on Facebook where I should have breakfast in the Springs the winner was unanimous: Creekside Cafe (996-8062, 239 Boyes Blvd, Sonoma).
Owner Michael Monahan and his family have operated the breakfast and lunch establishment for 15 years. Creekside Cafe offers shaded patio dining (dog friendly) and table and bar seating, in the tradition of any fine diner.
The family’s colorful collection of artwork decorates the walls, depicting various historic sites around the Springs and colorful vineyard landscapes. Each table has its own unique set of salt and pepper shakers, from the family’s own collection.
Breakfast and lunch specials are scribbled on large boards each day, with local favorites such as eggs benedict with smoked salmon. You can’t really go wrong – the chef at Creekside is the sous chef at Cafe La Haye.
My breakfast of choice: huevros rancheros. An egg over easy covered in mild salsa and a side of beans – I opted out of beans in lieu of trying the potatoes, which are the best fried potatoes I have had this side of the Mississippi. It comes with all the fixings – tortillas, sour cream, guacamole and plenty of hot sauce.
If you’re not in the Mexican breakfast mood, try their French toast. It’s the best I have ever had in my life and you will not regret the carb-bomb, as it is pure crispy yet sweet pleasure using a secret family recipe.
