Hospital parcel tax considered

Will Sonoma Valley voters be asked to vote during the March 7, 2007 gubernatorial election on a 5-year, $195 parcel tax to support the Sonoma Valley Hospital’s operations?
That question was hanging fire at press time; the Sonoma Valley Health Care District board planned to meet at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Sonoma Community Center to decide whether to put the parcel tax on the ballot.
The proposed parcel would need approval from two-thirds of voters in order to pass. It would replace the current parcel tax, which is set to expire on June 30, 2007.
The resolution to put the measure on the ballot said that the hospital can’t increase its revenues due to the low reimbursement rates, including those from governmental programs, commercial insurers and health maintenance organizations.

Sonoma Community Center receives $10k grant
The Sonoma Community Center has received a field of interest education grant of $10,000 from Community Foundation Sonoma County. The community center will use this grant to provide artist residencies in four Sonoma Valley middle schools that will focus on the question, “What is Community?”
The 12-week project will begin in January with weekly visits to Altimira, Adele Harrison, Woodland Star and Sonoma Charter School, and will culminate in students producing 30 banners that will symbolize their answers to the question.
An artist will be assigned to work one hour per week in each school and will assist students in producing 30 painted banners to be hung on the posts of Sonoma Plaza for approximately one month.
Community Foundation Sonoma County was established in 1983 to create an ongoing source of funds for local charitable organizations. It is a vehicle for community philanthropy that enables individuals of both modest means and substantial wealth to contribute to a permanent endowment for Sonoma County.
