Local group in
process of correcting Vallejo’s birth date

General Mariano Vallejo has been dead for more than a century, but the date of birth has always been wrong on this tombstone in Memorial Cemetery. A group of local history aficionados, including Elizabeth Kane of the State Historic Society, Paula Vinson and Peter Meyeroff, in concert with Vallejo descendants such as Martha McGettigan, has been struggling to correct the engraving. The arduous process has included obtaining baptismal records from the Catholic Archdiocese in Monterey and obtaining a special dispensation from the City of Sonoma. They also located a proper engraver, Napa Marble and Granite’s Stephen Simich, to change the date from July 7, 1808 to July 4, 1807. According to Vinson, the new tombstone will be unveiled over the Vintage Festival weekend in late September in a ceremony she believes may be filmed by a crew from Channel 7 in San Francisco.

Popular national ice cream maker hopes for Plaza outlet

Assistant city planner Wendy Atkins reports Ben and Jerry’s Homemade Ice Cream has applied to Sonoma’s Design Review Committee for approval of signage for their proposed storefront on the Northeastern corner of Sonoma’s historic Plaza. Because a food-related venue is already on the list of approved uses for the site, organizers expect it will be granted at next Tuesday’s 6:30 p.m. meeting.

Sonomans are
lagging behind
in statewide
water-saving efforts

Like so many well-intentioned goals, Sonoma’s efforts at water conservation have fallen somewhat short of the mark. The state of California wants citizens to cut water usage this year by 15 percent, but Sonomans have managed a meager 5.5 percent so far. The answer, according to Sonoma City Manager Mike Fuson, is a water cop. Effective immediately, a public works employee will walk a beat in search of serious water-wasters; if polite interventions are not effective, repeat offenders may face administrative fees up to $70.
