Fatal collision with big rig hauling grapes

A 78-year-old Vacaville woman was killed Thursday morning in a crash near highways 121 and 12 in Schellville, according to authorities. Heading north in a 2005 Buick Rendezvous sports vehicle, she attempted to turn left onto Hwy. 12 and ran head-on into a three-axle Freightliner flatbed carrying grapes in the southbound lane.

The force of the impact forced the Buick back into the northbound lane, where it collided with a second automobile, a Honda Odyssey minivan. That driver, a 49-year-old Santa Rosa man, was suffered minor injuries.

The woman, whose name was being withheld pending notification of her family, died at 10:10 a.m. at the scene, the CHP said. The truck driver, Christopher Schuh, 50, of Napa, was uninjured.

Both highways were closed for about 90 minutes while the accident scene could be investigated and cleaned up, authorities said.
