Behind Fedrick and Filippi, Dragons roll on homecoming

In the first 9 quarters of the football season, the Sonoma Dragons could only muster 17 points. It seems that those days of offensive futility are over.
After almost coming back to defeat Maria Carillo in their third non-league contest the previous week thanks to an improvement in their offense, the Dragons exploded with 35 points in the first three quarters en route to a 35-21 victory over the Windsor Jaguars in their Sonoma County League opener this past Friday.
Sonoma (1-3, 1-0 SCL) got off to a fantastic start, as they marched down the field on their first drive. 80 yards and eight plays later, senior running back Nick Fedrick rumbled in from a yard out to give the Dragons a 7-0 lead only three minutes into their Homecoming game.
Fedrick got some help from senior wide receiver Steve Filippi, who had only two catches in the game, but made both of them count. His first was an 84-yard reception on a streak pattern in the second quarter that led to one of Fedrick’s four touchdowns on the ground. He had another catch that was good for 32 yards, giving him the unique line of two receptions for 116 yards.
Fedrick had 24 carries for 189 yards, both career highs to go along with the career high in touchdowns. He matched his season total in scores in the first three quarters of the contest.
Windsor (1-4, 0-1 SCL) could only muster a touchdown against the stout Dragons defense before Sonoma’s reserves played most of the fourth quarter against the Jaguars first string offense. The Jaguars scored two touchdowns in to make the game seem closer than it actually was.
Windsor had scored 104 points on the season, but their spread offense was stifled thanks to a great combination of speed and coverage from Sonoma, who bothered Jaguar senior quarterback Blake Schmidt in passing situations and held senior running back Cameron Erion to under 50 yards rushing for the first time all season.
The Dragons defeated the Jaguars for the first time since 2004. Sonoma now travels to Recreation Park in Healdsburg to take on the Greyhounds this Friday night at 7:30 p.m. The Hounds (4-1, 0-1 SCL) lost to Analy on Friday night, 17-0.
