Plaza Foundation donates tree to city

Community members gathered on Wednesday for the dedication of a new elm tree, which was planted on the Plaza. The tree was donated by the Sonoma Plaza Foundation to support efforts to restore the northeast section of the Plaza where damaged trees had to be removed. City of Sonoma Park Supervisor Dave Chavoya selected the “Frontier Ulmus Carpiniflia,” which is fast growing, has a tolerance to Dutch elm disease and should integrate well with the other trees on the Plaza.
“This is a great opportunity for the Foundation to start the new year off with a project that will enhance our town’s centerpiece and continue our mission to preserve and restore the Plaza,” said Sonoma Plaza Foundation Director Denise Silver. “Since its inception in 1991, the foundation has raised over $850,000 through our fundraising event The Red and White Ball, and all of those funds have gone directly back into the community. We are pleased to be able to provide an enduring gift to the Plaza and the town.”
Past projects of the foundation have included new playground equipment, electrical renovation, trees for the Grinstead Amphitheatre, landscaping around City Hall and new benches and irrigation.
