Sonoma resident John Von Dohlen was correct, it turns out, in his assessment of his son when he told 911 dispatchers at 12:14 p.m. on Dec. 6, 2008, that his 37-year-old son Craig was “high on drugs” and seemed suicidal.
According to the toxicology report provided by Central Valley Toxicology in Clovis, Calif., to the Sonoma County Coroner’s Office, the younger Von Dohlen had 0.24 milligrams per liter of methamphetamine in his blood at the time. In the opinion of pathology experts at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, that is a toxic level.
Sheriff’s deputies who approached the Von Dohlen residence in response to the call were rushed by the man, according to the preliminary report by the Santa Rosa Police Department, the agency assigned to investigate the incident, and he was brandishing a rifle. The autopsy reported ten gunshot wounds, including a fatal shot to the head.
The matter is still under investigation, pending now just the ballistics report. The toxicology report is expected to be taken into consideration in the findings.
