The Sonoma County Board of Supervisors at its regular meeting on Tuesday approved two projects to help alleviate the potential for flooding within City of Sonoma limits.
While the First Street West Conduit Project is complete, during winter rains the inlet structure at the north end of the project has proven to be a maintenance problem, clogging with debris during even modest rainfall, with the excess runoff flowing down First Street West. Approved was the request by the City of Sonoma for $145,000 to modify that inlet, to function as originally designed.
The board also approved $194,000 for work on the city’s master drainage plan, to include a review of the city’s existing storm drain system, drainage ditches and open channels or creeks. Where flooding frequently occurs, the plan will include alternative projects for mitigation. The plan will be prepared in two phases, focusing first on the Fryer Creek watershed and then on the Sonoma Creek watershed; the Nathanson Creek watershed is not part of the approved plan.
