Local companies saluted for going Green

For demonstrating a commitment to sustainable practices, four local businesses have been cited by The Green Business Recognition Program.
The latest companies to receive awards are El Dorado Kitchen and Hotel; Sonoma Hills Retirement Center; GeoPraxis Inc.; and Kenwood Oaks Guest House. Each organization was presented with a certificate of recognition at Wednesday’s Sonoma City Council meeting.
Sonoma Valley continues to take a leadership role in green business, according to Laurie Decker, Sonoma Valley economic development manager. “Businesses that are recognized as green serve as a model in the community,” she said. “They are a great example of what’s achievable.”
The green recognition program was launched in 2007 by the Sonoma Valley Economic Development Partnership to promote, encourage, and support green business practices throughout the local community.
To achieve recognition, a business must meet several minimum requirements, including assessments of their energy and water efficiency. Businesses must also demonstrate green business practices in each of seven areas: solid waste prevention, recycling, purchasing, energy conservation, water conservation and water quality, transportation, and involvement of stakeholders. To date, the green program has recognized 27 businesses.
“These businesses consistently tell us that going through the process of implementing sustainable business practices is a positive experience for them in so many ways,” Decker said.
The El Dorado Kitchen and Hotel is also working on the “next level,” Decker said, which is applying for Bay Area Green Business Certification.
The Sonoma Valley Economic Development Partnership is a collaboration of the City of Sonoma, the Sonoma Valley Chamber of Commerce, and Sonoma County.
