Honoring their service

veterans-day

Sonoma’s 50th annual Veterans Day celebration included flags, uniforms, heartfelt speeches, bagpipes and a few tears. Hosted by American Legion Post 489 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the event at the Veterans Memorial Building drew more than 300 people, from boy scout to WW II veteran.

Guest speaker Chip Allen, who served on a Navy submarine, said he is constantly inspired by his fellow veterans, and those yet to come. “We know, having preceded them, that what we do ensures the freedoms we enjoy in the United States.” The formal observance was followed by a USO-style party at Vintage House, with a free lunch, entertainment and dancing.
