School district, Boys & Girls Clubs expand after school programs

Posted on October 13, 2010 by Sonoma Valley Sun

The Sonoma Valley Unified School District was recently awarded funding from the State of California to support after school enrichment programs at two more schools in Sonoma Valley. The partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sonoma Valley, who is currently serving Flowery, El Verano, and Sassarini schools through After School Education and Safety funding, will expand and the Club will provide the after school services at Altimira and Dunbar schools. The grant will allow for up to 112 students at Altimira and 84 students at Dunbar to be served on a daily basis.

SVUSD Superintendent, Louann Carlomagno said “This is a wonderful opportunity to provide additional support to our Altimira and Dunbar students. The Boys & Girls Club continues to be a strong partner in offering both tutorial and enrichment programs to our students. We look forward to our continued collaboration.”

“We are pleased the district is able to provide additional opportunity for the Club to serve more youth with after school enrichment programs and services,” said David Pier, executive director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sonoma Valley.” There is a great need in Sonoma, especially with our middle school youth, to have out of the classroom academic support and a positive and enriching environment that enhances their learning and creates opportunities for them that are otherwise not available.”

The School District and the Boys & Girls Club are now working in tandem to make preparations for the sites to become operational. A time line has not yet been established, but the after school services will be available as soon as possible.
