Pollinator maze comes to El Verano School

Students at El Verano School were fascinated by the visual lesson they got when they attempted to make their way through the Pollinators’ maze. Initiated by teacher Dave Neubacher, the maze helped students learn more about what pollinators do for the planet and the food supply.

Dave Neubacher has made a new name for himself at El Verano School. Officially known as Mr. Neubacher, the fifth-grade teacher’s new moniker could be, “The Bee Man.” Enlisting the help of his students, Neubacher has been taking Sonoma by storm with his crusade to help honeybees, butterflies other pollinators stay at the top of the environmental ladder.

Recently, Neubacher brought in “Mazemaster” Dwayne Kilgore to create a highly visual lesson for students. Kilgore worked for three hours constructing an elaborate maze on the playground blacktop. Many rolls of masking tape later, students were invited out to try the maze and help the pollinators reach their goal – the flowers on the other side.

Each time a student successfully completed the maze their name was placed on a hexagon shaped piece of paper that, when placed together, formed a bee hive. Almost every student from kindergarten to fifth grade got to walk through the maze. “It was hard to make it through,” some younger students said, while others said, “it was fun!”

“The pollinator maze was a fun way to show people what a pollinator does every day looking for flowers,” said one student from Neubacher’s class.
