Supes must find way to fix roads

Posted on June 9, 2015 by Sonoma Valley Sun

Dear Editor,

The County Supervisors would be very much mistaken if they were to read the major defeat of Measure A as a sign voters don’t think fixing the roads is a priority.

I spent many weeks earlier in the year talking with Sonoma Valley residents about the roads tax, telling them I believed it would help our community’s crumbling roads. I heard a lot of positive feedback about paying a tax to fix roads. But then, when voters got their sample ballots, I could feel the momentum shift. I heard repeatedly about the ambiguous ballot language and doubts expressed about how the money would be spent.

Plus, during the final weeks of the campaign, there were several newspaper articles about potential new spending on county programs and initiatives. This did not help lend credibility to the argument that there was a lack of funds for roads.

The Board of Supervisors needs to go back to the drawing board.
