With the goal of building a 2,400-square-foot building to replace and enlarge cramped, outdated office space, La Luz Center is entering phase two of a $1.5 million capital campaign to revitalize its Greger Street campus.

In 2012, La Luz was awarded a $25,000 Impact100 grant to remodel its decades-old building to provide privacy for client interviews. Also recognizing the importance of offering suitable waiting and interviewing areas for La Luz clients and adequate working space for staff and volunteers, First 5 and Sonoma County Health Services made significant donations to the remodel effort.

But when actual architectural planning began, it became apparent that replacing, not remodeling, the 1940s bungalow was the more practical move. Initial plans were drawn up, and the County has signed off on all permitting issues.

Now the focus is making it a reality. Phase one was very successful thanks in part to several major donors, said La Luz Executive Director Juan Hernandez. The next phase will widen the funding appeal.

“We know we have a broad base of supporters in the community,” Hernandez said. “We believe they will come forward to help us meet our goal so that La Luz can better serve its large Sonoma Valley community in achieving health, education and financial security.”
