Sun Eats guide: Veggie burgers

Just like a hamburger, not all veggie burgers are the same – vegetarians, vegans, and those wanting a “beef break” (for lack of a better term) are passionate enthusiasts for faux-meat burgers that are grain and veggie based.

From mushrooms to quinoa, Sonoma Valley offers hand-made patties that are sure to please. Here is where you can score veggie burgers in the Valley. For the sake of simplicity, “classic fixings” is defined as lettuce, tomato and onion.

B&V Whiskey Bar & Grille makes a housemade patty comprising edamame, shiitake mushrooms, cashews and chickpeas ($10). The sandwich is topped with vegan ginger aioli, classic fixings, and served on a gluten free bun. 400 1st St. W., Sonoma. 938-7110. bvsonoma.com

Community Cafe‘s veggie option is a combo of tofu and portobello ($11.95): a garlic black pepper tofu patty and a grilled portobello on a brioche bun topped with fontina cheese, basil aioli, mixed greens, tomato, red onion and avocado. Palooza makes their own falafel burger ($15) – which is basically a giant falafel served with Swiss cheese, classic fixings, and chipotle remoulade on a brioche bun. It’s the only veggie burger game in Kenwood. 8910 Sonoma Hwy, Kenwood. 833-4000. paloozafresh.com

Picazo offers the largest selection of burgers in the Valley, including a portobello burger ($12). It’s served with Swiss cheese, grilled onions, avocado, mayo, and classic fixings on a wheat bun with a side salad. 19100 Arnold Dr., Sonoma. 931-4377. picazocafe.com

The Red Grape makes the only quinoa burger ($12) in the Valley. It comprises a house-made quinoa patty, Gruyere cheese, red onion, and mustard aioli on a brioche bun. 529 1st St. W., Sonoma. 996-4103. theredgrape.com
