Update: Safeway strike vote leads to more talks

Posted on December 21, 2019 by Sonoma Valley Sun
After the worker’s union voted 95% to reject Safeway’s most recent contract offer and authorize a strike, the grocery giant has agreed to restart negotiations early in 2020.

Negotiations will resume on January 7 and 8, according to a statement released Friday by Local 5 of the United Food and Commercial Workers.

Members were told: “your union bargaining committee will continue to fight for a new contract that rewards your hard work in making your employer one of the most successful food retailers in the country.”

Meanwhile, Local 5’s strike authorization request is pending with the UFCW International Union, a requirement before any strike action may be taken.

Once authorization is granted, Local 5 said it will “immediately give Safeway the required 72-hour notice canceling our contract extension in anticipation of economic action against the company.”

Safeway has not issued any public statements on the situation.
