The Sonoma League for Historic Preservation presents a March 12 screening of Saving Places, the award-winning documentary filmed and directed by Sonoma filmmaker Joseph Daniel.
Narrated by Peter Coyote, the film follows the intrepid crews and passionate volunteers of HistoriCorps, a small but mighty nonprofit, through an entire season of work preserving and restoring a dozen highly-threatened, historically-significant buildings in remote areas across America.
The film details rescued structures ranging from fire towers and ranger cabins to mining complexes, lodges and legendary ranches.
The Sebastiani Theatre screening will be the film’s West Coast premier, and Daniel will be in attendance. It will then commence a nationwide theatrical tour in historic theaters.
In its first nine seasons HistoriCorps has engaged 3,300 volunteers to save 281 historic sites in 29 states. A recent informal audit by several U.S. agencies puts the number of already decaying, seriously threatened structures at an astonishing 30,000 – most of which will never be preserved due to lack of funding or manpower. It is an inexcusable loss of history.
Thursday, March 12. 7 p.m., wine reception with the filmmaker. Film at 7:30 p.m. $12-$15. Sebastianitheatre.com
