Beginners’ guide: How to start your own farm

Posted on May 20, 2020 by Sonoma Valley Sun

There is a simple pleasure in growing your own plants and harvesting them for your table. You get to eat the literal fruits of your labor and enjoy doing it, especially if you feel very passionate about farming. If you want to successfully start your own, you should remember some tips.

Set a farm specialty

There are so many plants and vegetables in the world that even if you want to farm them all, it would almost be impossible. If you are planning to make farming a business, it is better to produce tons of one kind than to have small quantities of different kinds of plants. When setting out in your new venture, only choose the ones you think are suitable for your land, have a marketable demand, and can be cultivated given the season and weather. To guide you with your choice, pick a few plants you like and start specializing in growing those. This is ultimately better in the long run as you get to provide the specific needs and environment of that plant. You may choose to rotate one after the other to maximize the yielding of the plants.

Hands-on experience

There are plenty of things you can learn online and farming books, but you will never learn farming by simply studying, but by doing it yourself and getting a lot of first-hand experiences. Go to a local farm and undergo apprenticeship from the farmers. Explore different kinds of farms and get yourself a mentor. When interacting with them, learn from their experiences, and don’t forget to leave some gifts for farmers who are sharing with you their knowledge and helping you hone your skills. Having a personal mentor who will teach you personally on an actual farm is so much better and more productive than getting yourself into formal schools.

Choose the right equipment

It is doable to start a farm using a few tools, but if you want to go into a bigger operation, then you must invest in farming equipment and essentials. These are not only used for manpower, but the benefit of the plants as well. When you can automate some important processes, work is simplified and you get to produce more products faster and more efficiently. The way to enjoy farming is to ease the most labor-intensive parts so that it won’t be taxing on the body. You also have to set up the needed environment of the plants because you have to protect them from insects and house them in a more controlled environment if needed. There are plenty of technological advancements now for the benefit of farmers.

Farming is something everyone should at least experience or practice no matter how small it is. It is a productive process and its results can be hugely beneficial for people. When you want to be more serious and you want to expand your farm, you should follow these simple tips to guide you as you begin this venture.
