Don’t be alarmed if you see smoke along Highway 12 near Glen Ellen this weekend — there’s a controlled burn planned for Bouverie Preserve.
The 14.5-acre controlled burn of annual grassland and oak savannah will begin around 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 7, or Sunday, November 8.
As part of a training event, the burn will clear dead and downed trees, and reduce invasive plants and pests. The result lowers the risk of wildfires, and promotes the growth of native plants and flowers.
Bouverie Preserve is located in Sonoma Valley near Glen Ellen, on the east side of Hwy 12, just east of the Arnold Drive stoplight. Travelers in the Glen Ellen and Kenwood area may see smoke in the air or experience slowing traffic.
This is a controlled burn conducted under a permit issued by CAL FIRE; do not call 911.
If weather conditions do not permit burning this weekend, crews will continue to train together on fire role-playing scenarios such as deploying fire shelters, triaging a broken limb, and offering basic first aid in the field.
The event is part of a three-year ‘all hands, all lands’ pilot project dubbed Cal-TREX Bay Area.
It is funded by federal, state, non-profits, and private agencies, including Audubon Canyon Ranch, The Bay Area Prescribed Fire Council, CAL FIRE, The Fire Learning Network, Prometheus Fire Consulting, US Forest Service, and The Watershed Center.
